Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrants – ASAM

ASAM is an independent, neutral and non-profit organization. It was founded in 1995 in Ankara for the purpose of helping refugees and migrants in Turkey.

From that day to this, ASAM supports refugees and migrants about access to their own rights and services socially and legally, gives psycho-social services, organizes various workshops and activities for the purpose of social adaptation. Today it gives services about psycho-social support and social-legal counseling, organizes social adaptation and skill developing activities towards refugees in 47 cities, with 83 offices and over 1700 personnel (social worker, protection liable, field worker, health educator, family counselor, mobile crew, psychologist, translator, lawyer, adaptation professional, disabled professional, language and skills educators, volunteers and administrative staff). Athens Represenment is opened in Greece, 2016. Foreign country representation is going to open this year in Brussels.

ASAM gives services to all kinds of refugees and migrants no matter their language, religion, sex, ethnicity and political views. It gives consulting services to over 50 ethnicities but mostly Syrians, Afghans, Iraqis, Iranians and Somalians.

Social workers, psychologists, health educators, translators, lawyers, adaptation professionals, disabled professionals, language and skills educators, volunteers, mobile fieldwork crew in ASAM, with the cooperation of the local authorities, United Nations and other civil society organizations aims at ease refugee and migrants’ accesses for their rights and services and provide their basic necessities.

ASAM also organizes meetings and conferences on an international and national base with the purpose of raising awareness about refugees and migrants and strengthening the cooperation and communication between civil society organizations and public institutions which are active in this field.

 

Works Towards Refugees

ASAM gives free social and legal consultancy, psycho-social support to the refugees and asylum seekers all around Turkey. At the same time, it supports to follow file processes in United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. It also helps refugees and asylum seekers to get over the language obstacles with translator support and gets in touch with local authorities and civil society organizations for the purpose of strengthening protection mechanisms.

ASAM is active especially offices in Edirne, Kırklareli, Balıkesir, Çanakkale, İzmir, Aydın and Muğla, in fields like find a solution to increasing irregular parallel border crossing from Turkey to Europe, support the people’s who are identified during the irregular migration or saved from irregular migration basic needs, gives them consultancy about their access to right to seek asylum.

In 2017 and 2018 1.009.558 refugees and asylum seekers came to the ASAM offices and take a total of 2.189.399 consultancy. Women and girls are making 51 percent of the beneficiaries.

ASAM maintains its studies especially with international institutions like European Union, UNHCR, UNICEF, UNFPA, WHO, UN Women, ILO, GIZ and also with the private sector representatives’ cooperations like MSD and Microsoft.
